As the year turns a corner, all kinds of emotions and memories can be stirred up at this time. Recently, we saw a commercial that we now watch every time it comes on tv. This is unusual for we usually quickly grab the mute button for most ads, especially those for gutter guards and bathroom renovations!

This particular commercial starts with three elderly women, wrapped in winter apparel, coats, scarves, and gloves, sitting on a bench at the top of a snow-covered hill drinking hot chocolate. As they watch the “youngsters” sledding down the hill, their faces gleam as their wise eyes also project a bit of sadness and envy. Memories of earlier days, we are sure, are flowing through their minds as they watch the kids go up and down the hill, pink cheeked, and full of energy.

In the next scene, while sitting on the bench again watching the sledders, the taller of the three ladies presents the other ladies with a large box. With wonder and curiosity, the ladies open it. As this short story unfolds, we can see them placing three newly purchased cushions into three molded plastic Flexible Flyers. And before you know it, they are off sliding down the snowy hill as the kids marvel while the three ladies beam with elation and merriment as they zip by, scarves a flying.

It is a charming scene of freed spirits chock full of ritual and tradition. To see these ladies, wise eyes go from sadness to excitement, is as heartwarming as a puppy at Christmas.

Okay, so the ad is for Amazon delivery BUT it really makes a splendid point! If you dream of something, at least try to make it happen as it just may come true even if you must cushion it a bit.

Like hot chocolate and sledding, the power of rituals and traditions are a deeply human experience. It does not need to be a major event to make a major impact on your life or on someone else’s. Experts say that even simple rituals have measurable benefits. Healthy rituals can reduce anxiety and, if predictable, can be something to look forward to. Rituals and traditions strengthen relationships and can be something to depend on.

It seems that the advice this holiday season is that if you have rituals, it is important to use them. If you do not have any, start some. For it is never too late to slide down that hill as long as you can contact Amazon and cushion your bum!

Happy Holidays to all! May you embrace the winter and rise out of it renewed and ready to bloom again.
