An Oath to Keep

“I, ________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…” This week, the Washington, DC area had its first frost warning of the season. How fitting as Virginia was also included in that warning. This warning was an apt response to Tuesday’s Virginia elections and the results on the up and down ballots where Republicans overall took the win. Across the US, at least thirteen members who attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan 6th won their bids for election. What Makes A Hero?

As children, we were taught to never tell a lie. We have heard that if you start out telling a lie, it makes telling the truth a whole lot harder. If you lie for almost four years, it makes it even harder. In today’s world, we find ourselves searching for those who speak the truth and for true heroes. Yes, heroes who are admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, and self-sacrificing qualities. Let us look back at a true hero of civil rights and equality. Rosa Parks was born in Alabama in 1913.  Both of her grandparents were former slaves. In her childhood, she recalled frequent sightings of Ku Klux Klan members in full garb marching down their streets. She…

Being Brave on the Road to Peace

Omaha Beach in Normandy displays a sculpture named Les Braves which commemorates the American soldiers who in 1944 found their rest and final peace there. Those soldiers were the face of bravery and courage. Resigned to keeping America safe and resisting the corruption in Europe, they awaited their fate, ducked their heads, and ran towards the beach where many lost their lives in that instant. They were young people who had full lives ahead of them but, instead, they held their heads up high and marched in to enlist and join the fight for freedom, democracy, and peace.
