We have been scratching our heads lately trying to identify what stage humanity is in its development. Maybe a New Age or the Age Without Conscience would be a fitting title. We thought we would look back into history to gain some clarity.
Since life began billions of years ago following the Big Bang, there have been “Ages” that separated the survival and development of living creatures on Earth. The Big Bang is said to define the formation of the Universe and later the formation of the stars and the planets, including Earth. As the theory elucidates, life on earth exploded with the evolution of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. One group of mammals developed hands, thumbs, color eyesight, and larger brains and evolved into a new creature – the bipedal human who walked on two legs.
You may recall from your earlier studies that the Greek farmer Hesiod was inspired by the Muses, the daughters of Zeus, to write a creation story that traced the lineage of bipedal mankind through the ages. His writings included the five ages of man – Golden, Silver, Bronze, the Age of Heroes, and the Iron Age. Hesiod proclaimed that the fourth Age of Heroes was a better and just time when humans were demigods, strong, brave, and heroic. Greek legend states that great wars followed and many of this era were destroyed. This led to the Iron Age.
Based on Hesiod’s writings, we are now thought to be living in the period of the Iron Age. This is a time when all modern men (and women) are created by Zeus as evil and selfish, burdened with weariness and sorrow. During this time, all manner of evil is said to come in to being. In the Iron Age, piety and other virtues and most of the gods who were left on Earth have abandoned it. And, to add salt to the wound, Hesiod predicted that Zeus would destroy this race someday. The blending of the mythological with realism created a Greek story to be learned from. It is quite a narrative and a strong message about the Ages where humans are characterized as descending from innocence into degenerative behaviors. Wow, how fitting!
Here we are in 2021 and does this sound familiar to all of us? The takeaway seems to be that humans can lean towards evil and that some humans can and will worship possessions over principles. We see today, also, that competition can rule over love and honesty and that greed is the ultimate evil. Many of us remain shocked at the lies, greed, and pure wickedness of more than a handful of those in politics today. We truly believe that we are faced with a New Age – that of a lack of conscience.
From what we understand, the theory of evolution was that humans evolved into having larger brains, to be smarter, and more resourceful. Now, we wonder what has gone awry. So many human beings are living without a conscience and the rules are constantly changing to suit the person who wants so desperately to win. Some people take their toys and go home to count their money and rank their level of power. Power hungry, desperate, and living with the devil inside of them…what a sad existence this must be! We ask ourselves how Mitch, McCarthy and the others can live with themselves. What does it feel like to be that evil? Are they so self-exalted that they cannot feel at all?
We wonder if we have peaked in our human evolution such that we will soon revert to walking on all fours once again. Will we return to living in trees and await the coming of the Second Ice Age? Have we human beings turned the tide back so far that there is no return? Has the human conscience begun to erode and is losing its guide to right and wrong?
Despite the current day wave of negativity, we live with hope as we work to remove these arrogant, political scoundrels from office. We refuse to join them in their narcissistic lifestyle and rage parties. We will continue to take the high road and work “like the devil” to vote them out. They can choose to act despicable and walk on all fours but we will continue to stand tall for humanity.
