Mama Says…

After writing this week’s blog, we read it over as we always do multiple times and decided to tear it up. It read like a history lesson about a racist Trump and how he resembles the racist George Wallace. The only difference between the two of them seems to be that Wallace was a Democrat! The blog detailed the White House directive of use of force by unidentified Federal storm troopers who denied peaceful protestors their First Amendment rights. And how, if arrested, they had to sign their First Amendment rights away by stating that they would never protest again. We wrote that several news media, photographers, and peaceful protestors have been maimed or killed by blunt force with plum-sized,…

Saudade – The Missing Part

After another weekend goes by, we find again that we miss our friends. We miss creating an atmosphere in our home for friends to come over to eat, drink, talk, console, and be consoled. We miss the clatter of silverware and strangers’ voices at a restaurant on a Saturday night. We miss the beach with the smell of suntan lotion, surf, and music in the distance. We miss the mystery of a quiet library and wondering what people are reading or thinking about in such silence. We miss life and the freedom to come and go that we were all lucky enough to have known for our lifetime. We miss knowing that we can go somewhere even if we don’t…

The Soul of This Nation

As you subsist in your home, work from home, or work in your office, you may find yourself encountering the second wave of Covid-19 boredom. In the first wave, which started approximately in March, we somehow believed that it would be self-limiting. And we believed that there was an exit plan. Now, 5 months into this pandemic, we are wondering if that exit door even exists. Here in Florida, the state has opened up much too soon only to have to begin to close down again. We have become the hot spot of the country as the country becomes the hot spot of the world. Throughout this Covid-19 journey, we find ourselves wondering about the identity of our country and…

Take A Breath

As protests march on and the virus expands, we are reminded that, despite this, life goes on. We lose loved ones, we are faced with new challenges, and our resilience is endlessly tested. The locusts are coming. Florida has a 110-degree heat advisory. There is an earthquake in California. And, the Saharan dust storms are sweeping the country. We say, bring it on for we will dig deep and muster up our resilience! The word resilience is an interesting one. It was originally a scientific term taken from Latin and, in 1640, was used to mean springing back. It was first used in English by Francis Bacon. In physics, resilience is the ability of a substance to absorb energy and…

Lordy, Lordy – Are We Bored?!

Are you getting bored? Do you feel selfish saying it and feeling that way? Do you find yourself waking and asking what day it is and having to check the calendar to see? Are you still tired after eight hours of sleep? Do you long for the good old days that were not that long ago? Are you going nuts staying at home, working from home, or are you fitting into the changes? Are you working, retired, or just tired? Do you have pandemic fatigue? We started isolation on March 19th. Well, actually it was the evening before. We cancelled birthday parties, movie dates, theater tickets and put a hold on most of our volunteer efforts. We made a list…

Breakdown Day

We had heard early on in the pandemic that couples were doing well with distancing and staying in their homes. Some felt even closer because of it. Those living by themselves were finding ways to connect on a deeper and wider scale than before. We were all finding ways to cope and people were adjusting. That was then and this is now.  Fast forward two months as things progressed. Cabin fever sets in, your hair grows long, and a familiar voice may suddenly resemble fingernails on a chalk board. This past week, we experienced what Andrea has termed Breakdown Day. Our Breakdown Day consisted of driving to the beach for a “day off” and arguing the entire 30-minute drive there…

President Boondoggle – the Swamp Master

We started this week with a cloudy and rainy day. It was akin to a snowy New England day without the shoveling and cold. It was a stay-in day for thinking and putting some words on paper – so to speak. These days our thoughts seem to drift to Trump and his daily tomfooleries. It seems imperative to keep up with his ongoing shenanigans. As of yesterday, Trump suggested that people ingest Lysol and beams of ultraviolet light to treat Covid-19. This was so ludicrous that the company that produces Lysol, based in Britain, had to follow up immediately with a statement urging customers not to ingest the product. Dr. Deborah Birx sat there withering as he made these statements.…

Then and Now

Some thoughts from Maggie - This week, I undertook a project that I have been putting off for some time. Over time, I have acquired many personal photographs and those of my family. I have preserved them in large and heavy photo albums that have now proven too heavy to lug around. I have decided that it is time to go through them again and send many of the family photos to my sister and brother. One never takes on a project like this without experiencing some emotion. The family photographs date back to the 1800’s and a few are “tintypes” which are quite interesting. Tintypes were produced in the 1850’s and 1860’s. As a result, I have spent the…

A Handshake and a Sneeze

(On this day, Maggie is pondering...) Today is Good Friday for those of you who practice the Christian religion. I do remember going to church years ago and, towards the end of the service, we were instructed to give the sign of peace which was a gentle handshake and a smile with others near you. I also remember learning as a child to say “God Bless You” to anyone who sneezed. I was taught as a child that it was good manners and I have always been curious about the origin of this ritual and that of shaking hands. As we look to science for answers, it might be interesting to note that a sneeze can fly at 100 miles…

Dreams or Reality

(A reflection from Maggie...) Andrea and I are now over two weeks into the distancing and isolation. A week ago, I awoke at 3am worried about the “supply chain.” How are we going to continue to get groceries and other needed items?! From a sleepy haze, I tried to solve this problem. Maybe this will be the rebirth and return of the American farmer. Having solved that problem, I eventually fell back to sleep. For those of you who aren’t “Preppers” (Survivalists) or don’t live on a functioning farm, you may be asking the same question. But hopefully not at 3:00 a.m. or at least we hope not. We do hope after we are on the other side of this…
