Just a Theory

Sometimes we get tired of writing about negative stuff. Lord knows there is enough negative material out there right now but there are also good things happening as well. The Bans Off Our Bodies march is an example of one. Last week, we joined a few hundred women and men in Sarasota to march for a woman’s right to choose as many did across this country. Imagine in America having to fight for the right to choose. On so many levels, this has become our reality! Throughout our lives, there are times when we elect to take a position. We form opinions and we choose sides whether it is for a sports team, a cause, or a political figure or…

Invest in Our Planet 2022

Today is Earth Day and the theme for this year’s Earth Day is Invest in Our Planet. Earth Day was established in 1970 by Wisconsin Democrat Gaylord Nelson who was inspired by the Vietnam “teach-ins” and it became the largest grassroots environmental movement and large-scale fight for environmental causes. Earth Day led to the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, the establishment of the EPA, and more. Yes, today focuses on the earth that we walk, bike, and drive on every day. It is what we fly over, around, and send rockets and shuttles from. It is what we put things into and remove things from. And, so far, the earth has been generous to humans and…

Tsunami

In our office, we have a bumper sticker that reads “One Human Family.” It was given to us by Maggie’s dear high school friend who lives in the Florida Keys. One Human Family is the “official philosophy” of Key West. The motto is simple and it means that all people are equal members of one human family. It underscores that despite differences in race, nationality, sexuality, and other differences, those differences are superficial and should not lead to cultural divisions. It is a noble cry for humanity to come together and recognize that we are One, we are Human, and we can be a Family if we choose to do so. One Human Family should not be such an arduous…

As the World Turns

We have begun to understand that to be human is to be conflicted. The choice between doing and not doing can be a challenge. For example, the other night we went to a Chris Botti concert. We bought the tickets three years ago and the performance was cancelled due to COVID and finally rescheduled. It is the first time that we had ventured out into a crowded, inside venue in over two and a half years. We found ourselves conflicted on a number of levels. Was it going to be safe? Should we go at all? How would we feel once we got there? We decided to go knowing that the venue required all attendees to be masked and that…

Don’t Leave Me Here

We cannot thank our friends enough for their concerns and messages of support that we received following the last blog. It is a challenging time for our country, our world, our humanity, and our environment. Sometimes it is difficult to write about kindness when there is so much tragedy happening in the world. There is so much to think about in today’s realm. The world is certainly a mix of love, hate, kindness, and confusion. We were at a big box store last week and saw a boy around fifteen wearing an interesting T-shirt. It was dark gray with a spaceship taking off in the distance and it read “Don’t Leave Me Here.”  We found this perplexing and realized that…

Bring Back Comity

Comity = courtesy and considerate behavior towards others Over two years ago, we found ourselves semi-laughing about saying hello by knocking elbows. Today, on a more serious note, in the US we have lost over 900,000 to COVID, the young and the old and those in-between. It has created a world of unrest and vigilance in many ways. Things may seem a little shaky once again and more of a challenge due to COVID. Just when we thought we might have a bit more freedom, we find ourselves having to step back to keep safe. But, wearing a mask is easy but it’s the mental strain that takes its toll. Many in today’s world have taken to being greedy and…

That’s Our Betty!

At least there is something everyone can finally agree on, we hope. It’s Betty. Betty White was the picture of health and kindness, spunk, and a mix of classy nastiness. We all loved Betty because she loved life, she loved you, her audience, and her profession. She loved animals and she loved being alive and being human. She had a great run from 1922 to 2021. Who says the good die young? Not Betty! Betty was entertainment through and through but not that phony sticky stuff. She started out at age 8 on radio. She skipped college to jump start her career. She was a DJ at one point and even drove a PX truck for the AWVS during WWII.…

Ready or Not – Here I Come!

As children, we played Hide-and-Seek. As you may recall, there was one kid who was “it” who would close his or her eyes while the other little kids hid. After a count of about ten, the kid who was “it” would yell “ready or not, here I come!” and would search to find the other kids. When s/he did, the first kid to be found (usually hiding behind a bush or a car) would scream and run like crazy. The first player found would take the lead as “it” and start the game all over again. For some reason that game came to mind as we approach 2022. We think that’s because for us, change can be analogous to the…

The Birth of Light

The history of the origin of light is pretty amazing. When thinking about it, we recall that Humphry Davy invented the first electric light and Thomas Edison, the first light bulb. The 1990’s invention of long-life bulbs and Compact Fluorescent bulbs are now the champagne of light bulbs. Daylight is another story. Those studying physics tell us, just a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang, the moment of first light was born. This is known as the Era of Recombination – the birth of light. It was at this point that the universe went from being totally opaque to transparent. Fast forward to the evolution of humankind and the survival of our species way before any need for…

Good and Plenty

Maggie, from time to time, talks about her parents and how they went through the Depression as children. Her mother was not a hoarder but she was a re-user, particularly glass jars. It was an apt example of not wasting a thing and truly living the “waste not, want not” ideal of the time. A version of this phrase from 1576 was “Willful waste makes woeful want.” This saying is also traced back to a 1772 proverb, “waste not, want not. The less we waste, the less we lack in the future.” It was first noted in the US in 1932 in the comedy film, “Topper Takes a Trip.” Placards with this saying were frequently hung in kitchens as a…
