Roe Your Vote

Rebecca Lee Crumpler was born in Christiana, Delaware in 1831. After living in Pennsylvania, Boston, and Richmond, Virginia and working as a nurse, she moved back to Massachusetts. There she attended the New England Female Medical College in Boston and, in 1864, she became the first African American woman to become a Doctor of Medicine in the United States. Around the same time, while decent people like Dr. Crumpler were working to save lives, relieve pain, and prevent illness, 40 states were banning abortion. In the same year, Arizona enacted its ban on abortion soon after it became a territory. While women of all colors and cultures were pushing to succeed during that time, territories, states, and their elected leaders,…

The Egg or the Chicken

Spoiler alert…this blog gets graphic. We are angry, feeling a bit defiant, and maybe going off the rails. Sometimes there are particularly difficult and appalling problems that we feel we must address. As we see it, the dark ages are approaching, the world is spinning backwards, and the attack on women is becoming increasingly evident. Not only are the laws and rules changing but the war against women is now being seen at all levels of social media, politics, and even in churches. The Atlantic reports that Elon Musk tweeted that he was going to inaugurate a new college, the Institute of Technology & Science, calling it TITS. The magazine also reported that the degrading of women is seen across…

“The Chosen One”

Trump is now calling himself “The Chosen One.” Ben Carson recently called Trump “Another King David.” King David, the once King of Israel, was famous for playing the harp while worshiping God and for killing the Philistine giant, Goliath, with a slingshot. So, the stories go on…imagine Trump playing a harp and shooting a sling shot. Why does, “You’ll shoot your eye out” from the Christmas Story come to mind? By the way, it is also written in the Bible that King David committed adultery, tried to cover up the affair by killing the woman’s husband, committed several murders, and caused many deaths and illness. And at a time when Kings went off to war, David sent out his entire…

Orange Jesus

Many of Trump’s followers believe that Trump is the second coming of Christ and the “Holy Figure” anointed by God. We are starting to believe that he thinks he is Jesus. Isn’t this the “Orange Jesus” that recently told his non-supporters at Christmas “to rot in hell?” The reality is that Trump’s fake Christian nationalism’s only virtue is the use and abuse of religion. If you have seen Trump’s ad on Truth Social, “God Made Trump,” you were probably sickened by it. And, if you have not seen it and want to understand how Hitler is being channeled through Trump, sit down and listen but do it before dinner so you don’t lose your cookies. The promo praises him as…

Awaiting the Tipping Point

In physics, there are times when a series of small changes or incidents creates enough energy to cause a significant effect. It can be a critical point that creates remarkable changes. These so called ”tipping points” can be good or bad. In the case of the camel and the straw, it was bad news for the camel as it became its breaking point and the straw that broke the camel’s back. The “last straw,” as it is called, originated in English and Arab proverbs in the 1700’s and are sometimes read as “Tis the last feather that breaks the horse’s back.” Whether in terms of a camel or a horse, it does not matter for man or beast or a…

Coming for Us!

Tomorrow, May 17th, is a major Women’s March for reproductive rights in DC and in other US cities since the 1970’s when the Supreme Court heard Roe vs. Wade. A victory for Roe was called a landmark decision for women in 1973. Now, almost 50 years later, we are entering a retrogressive state in this country. By definition, a retrogressive state means returning to an earlier state, typically a worse one. This is a fitting term for where we sit and stand politically today. As the Senate voted this week to allow the banning of abortions and we await the Supreme Court’s decision, the fact that we need another “Bans Off Our Bodies” march is staggering. General Westmorland once said,…

How Dare They

The assault continued as members of the Republican Party sat for hours taking swipes at the Democrat’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Why is it that, especially, women of color must work ten times harder for a position that they are ten times more qualified for? The Republican Party is proving in this process to be the dregs of the earth. It is already the party of Trump, Thomas, Kavanaugh, and Gaetz, all of whom have been accused of wrong doings with women. And now the party dares to take swipes at the more than capable Ketanji Brown Jackson. Not since the questioning of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford, have we seen such a disgusting display of…

Drive On Ladies!

March is Women’s History Month. You may not know the name of Alice Huyler Ramsey but she is a woman to be remembered. She was born in 1886, attended Vassar College, and lived in a time in the early 1900’s before the paving of roads. Although she loved horses, in 1908 her husband bought her a green Maxwell DA runabout and she quickly found a passion for driving. As a 22-year-old housewife from Hackensack, New Jersey, she entered driving endurance races and did well in them. At one event, being one of only two women in the race, she met a man who worked for Maxwell. He proposed that she take a cross country trip as a stunt to increase…

Rise Up

In last week’s blog, we challenged ourselves to be more positive and keep things lighter as we move towards election day. We cannot say that we are not going through some withdrawal by not writing about the week’s events surrounding the foolish happenings at the White House, but it does feel better not lingering over the madness. Now 87 days – that’s 12 weeks - until the election. Things are getting exciting! On a chilly note for the National Ice Cream Month in July, we would like to give a belated shout out to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. They are a Vermont company that opened in 1978 and has always supported social justice from same sex marriage to criminal…

A Perspective

An interesting perspective from Maggie, a DC native: “I am white but part of my soul is black. I grew up in DC, which was then nicknamed “Chocolate City.” When I was young, I was told certain things that are now disturbing to me, like slaves were happy to be slaves. At the time I was too young to know about systemic racism. I did not understand this and today in contrast, I have a different perspective on xenophobia. The word and concept of Slavery equals bondage, captivity, oppression, and servitude and is the opposite of freedom. Why would anyone be “happy” being a slave? What a lie we were told. I should have asked the person at that time,…
